The Promise of Continuity | mixed-media sculpture
As a water feature it explores water as a cyclical element and a life-giving force: sustaining, purifying, and shaping our world.
Motivated by a love for storytelling, Diana set out to create a work that serves as an allegory for life. Inspired by gargoyles—figures that protect and guard over earthbound spirits—this sculpture focuses on multiple sculpted heads spouting water from their mouths.
The piece weaves together natural elements, symbolism, and human experience. The Sun and the Moon, depicted on opposite sides, reflect the long-standing human tradition of personifying celestial bodies, from the Barberini Sun and Bernini’s Fontana della Barcaccia in Rome to the Man in the Moon composed of various lunar maria.
Upright and upside-down human heads are placed opposite each other, reflecting life’s dualities and the opposing forces within us. The celestial bodies, bound by gravity, interact with one another—just as the Earth orbits the Sun and the Moon orbits the Earth, they create a cosmic dance.
This eternal motion forms a pattern that Diana painted onto the fountain’s column, along with other symbols that further emphasize the idea of universal interconnectedness and the promise of continuity.
